CPR overflow question

I aquired a CPR overflow used from a member and was curious about the hole at the top of the overflow piping. It says that you need to use an air pump there, which was not included. The pump is said to take out any air that would break the continuous syphon. My question is what pump should I get and does it need to be run continuously or only after water changes/times when air could have entered due to syphoning stopping???

thanks.

I bought one for my fuge before I found out I shoulda bought a LifeReef. Anyway, the pump to get is the aqualifter and it remains on all the time. This pump draws out air and water, so stick the outflow from the pump back into the chamber of the overflow or something equally convenient.

Be sure to get the pre filter.Costs a few bucks but extends pump life.

I used to have a CPR 800 GPH overflow and used a Maxi-Jet MP1200 to draw out any air that got into the top of the siphon. I ran this way for 2 years and the only problem I had initially was algae growing/clogging the clear tubing I was using to connect the powerhead to the overflow. I replaced this with black tubing and never had a problem again. Course the powerhead needed cleaning every couple of months.

I never used the aqualifter but imagine it may be a better solution though...

Yes, the Aqualifter is the suggested pump.

I used to have the CPR SYS900. Actually, I still do. It's in the garage. I can't stand that overflow.

I hope you have better success than I did.
