how to set up deep sand bed bucket

Could someone please give me explicit instructions on how to set up one of these. I read all 14 pages of the thread on this but still dont understand. I know NOTHING about plumbing. My tank does NOT have a sump. I don't understand what pulls the water from the tank down to the buxket and then how the water gets back up to the tank. I don't understand what keep the holes you drill in the bucket from leaking and I do not know what a bulkhead is. I would really like to set one of these up after hearing all of the positive results. Could someone please tell me exactly what I need and how it works.

Wow.... I would re-read carefully. Your tank has no sump??? What type of filtration are you using?? An overflow will take the water to sump/bucket. A bulkhead will not work on a round bucket. Must have flat surface. Can't tell you much more without more information on your setup. Did you reseach saltwater, before taking the plunge??? Or is this a LFS job??

Never enough time to do it right???

r0bin,

It sounds to me like tank is just a standard tank and is not drilled to accodate an over-flow. If this is the case then the DSB bucket will probably not be a good idea for your system. THE bucket system works well with a drilled, or reef-ready tank, because it uses gravity to do all of the work. The water from the overflow drains into the bucket on one side, across the sand, and then out the other side and into the sump through a hole drilled in the bucket (with a bulkhead fitting to keep water from leaking out.)

oh, ok. Thanks for the help. It did sound like everyone's tanks had a sump as the conversation progressed.
