Pod Warning

I am not going to mention the name of the site that I odered my Pods from at the moment. Just be real careful where you order from and check them good before putting in tank. I didn't do this and put them in yesterday and this morning noticed at least 6 Aptasia. They are on the bottom rock where I put the Pod weed. I have had a Reef Tank for over 10 years and have never had any. Now I have to figure out how to get rid of them. I warned the Seller and they are supposed to post a warning on their Pods. I bought 2 portions and put one in the DT. The other portion I saved to put in the Refugium when I get it running. I will have to ditch them as I know they are full of them too.
Be very careful!!

get a dozen pepermints and at least one will have the taste for 'em. i watched one...with my own eyes.....about a month ago clear my tank of all aptasia. at night I would use my tv's light to watch them parade around (during the day they mostly hid out) and one night i watched one tearing up an aptasia. they appear to like the guts as thats what he was eating while but eventually he nibbled every part of 'em. anyways pepermints can be sensitive when added to an establishly populated tank. basically they r sometimes not hardy when with other species of shrimp as they fight and peppermints ussually lose. so in my cas...e my bullseye pistol shrimp hunted each on down and now i only have one. i am sure that he killed the one that would eat aptasias as i see them comming back in the exact same spots. I believ that the shrimp ussually repeat probes holes where aptasia;s were and repeatedly kill off any new buds. so much that eventually there is no aptasia and all possabily of them ever comming back is zero. mine was short lived so i believe this is why it wasnt succesful.seriously the aptasia totally dissapeared in a course of 2 nights. and now they are like resprouting again. this is why apatasia r said to be very very tenacious at regrowing / healing when you are trying to extract them. in any case next week i plan on getting another 6 . i have tried injecting them but again you have to hit each one and repeat inject for a few days as the resprout. also keep nutient levels low and maybe you can starve them off. they like dirty over fed tanks. just my experience and good luck.

Peppermint shrimp do great - they aren't the fastest (like say "Kalk injections") but they will get rid of them within a few weeks and keep them done until all remnants are KIA. I purchased 2 for my 157g and they didn't do ANYTHING for 3 weeks... then one morning I came out to check the tank and there wasn't a single aptasia to be found anywhere... I guess they finally got hungry.

BTW: where are you located - maybe I can take the weed off your hands if you are going to toss it... my Peppermints will thank me

Best of luck,
John.

Would you please tell us what site you got them from? It's not much of a warning if you don't warn us against what site they were from.

John, I am in Oregon.
I bought them from ****************. I am negotiating with John about what to do. I think they should at the least replace the Pods with some clean one's. He said they would post a warning that Aptasia may be included, but I checked today and do not see it. I will let you know the out come. So far he has said he will sell me some Peppermints at 20% off the first week in April. They are out of stock. I may have to tear down my tank to get to the bottom rocks and try the injections. There are a lot of Mushrooms on the rocks so I will have to be real careful, if I go this route. I hear Vinegar works.

Wow, he should send you some Peppermints for FREE for a mistake like that. Ah well, Peppermints are cheap, relatively speaking. I was lucky, when I put them in the refugium with a sea lettuce rock that had Aptasia hitchikers on it, they got right to work; there wasn't a single Aiptasia in sight in under 5 minutes. I left them in the fuge for a few days to catch any late bloomers and then transferred them to the main tank.

I'm wondering if the majanos that suddenly popped up in my tank (after having the same rock for over a year) had anything to do with the pods I purchased.
