ozone and skimmers...question!

my lfs said that once you hook ozone to your skimmer, you wont get anymore skimmate anymore? is this true? if so, where does the organic matter and protiens go?

ps, i am hooking a red sea 100 mg deluxe ozonizer to a asm g-3 skimmer on a 95g reef. and advice?

that is what i thought, the LFS just started running his ozone about 6 weeks ago, i think he either has to adjust the skimmer setting to skim wetter or maybe his 1985 oceanic skimmer doesnt work well with ozone.

to my knowlede ozone makes a skimmer run better pulling out more/darker skimmate. can anyone else confirm this?

Yes my skimmate is darker than pre-ozone. You will have to adjust the skimmer as pumping ozone through the skimmer changes production. Takes some tweaking.

i run ozone on my big skimmer and get a different kinda of skimmate. not a much as no ozone but with the ozone the skimate is a little wetter, once tuned to skim wet, but is also gets a nasty black sludge on the bettom of the collection cup.

Am I happy running ozone ? Yes, I believe the tank looks better. That said, I am not happy with my aquazone deluxe 100. Next time I buy a unit it will be a Sanders or Aquamedic.

It did slow down my Geo recirc skimmer and making adjustments helped. The problem is that when the ozone generator shut off the skimmer would overflow. I use an old berlin skimmer to feed ozone.

From what I've been seeing, it would be better,if you have the room, to run the ozone through a seperate reactor, or skimmer.

If you have the room.

Well, I dont believe the ozone output on mine is as advertised. My tank rarely gets over 300 mv. It is producing some because I can smell it on top of the collection cup. My 100mg is cranked up to max. It may just be a defective unit. My water is crystal clear though. I quit worrying about it.

when you add ozone you have to adjust your skimmer for the defferance. i don't no if those old oceanic skimmers at your LFS are adjustable enough. i would not use one in a high flow skimmer (down darft- beckect..). a big needle wheel, air stone or venture skimmer would be best IMO. a large volume skimmer, something that would keep the ozone in the skimmer longer. the asm 3 would be ok IMO.

i have been running ozone thru the CSS 65 for about a week now and it is working very well. i am gettting minimal skimmate but the tank looks great and my ORP hold right around 375mv. i only inject 25mg of ozone and it doesnt even run all the time. i think i will continure to use the CSS 65 and do the recirec mod to my G3 and run it as a straigt skimmer.
