quick question on live sand

I was currently discussing my tank with someone in my reef club and when i told them that i have five inch deep sand bed and used all live sand from local reefers, he said it was impossible to have five inches of live sand. How is this possible? It seems crazy to me, but hopefully someone can explain to me how you cant have 5 inches of live sand, or give me enough explanation on how it IS possible that i can have a decent response to this
