Look what I pulled up!!!...Is it reef safe?
So I saw something move under a rock...in fact no, it was the whole rock moving! I lift up the rock and to my surprise...SURPRISE!!! Look what I pulled up!
So do you think he's reef safe? I think those claws are all show, I don't think he'll eat any snails or hermits...in fact I think the snails and hermits will be cleaning him and I'm sure they can form a symbiotic relationship. He looks vegetarian to me...... I must have gotten him from a new lfs that opened called : Ranch 99. They have great deals on fish and shrimp too and tons of clams (literally hundreds to choose from!) You can even find squid and octopus there...wow now thats a LFS!!! |

Yea,
He's reef safe. Just don't put any fish in your tank! Have him mounted on a plank and hang it on your wall!

They very sensitive to chemical changes. So......
Bring water up to 210 F (100 C to non-Americans) put crab in slowly. Wait 5 mins then enjoy. Burp!....Excuse me. |

jeez, had me goin there!
You would need atleast a 500g tank to put it in or it would just look out of place, besides you know what would eventually happen...one day you would be really hungry with nothing in the house to eat except, well you know the rest! |

I would say your crab is reef safe. Notice no hair on the arms/legs.. he should be OK to go back into your tank

Proper Acclimation & Introduction of Hitchhiker Crab
With all the confusion on the proper Identiification and Introduction of Hitchhiker crabs, I thought I would make a step-by-step easy to follow guidline on what to do:
Step 1: Identify and Inspect Your Crab: ...in this case I have determined it is a species called: Dungeoness Crabass and seems to be free of any parasites. Step 2: Prepare Acclimation Chamber: Also a form of QT it is important to prepare the acclimation chamber to very specific temperatures...in this case, heat water untill oxygen is seen rising to the surface. Step 3: Introduction of Crab/ Acclimation: Make sure you slowly place any crabs into the acclimation chamber as placing too quicly may result in much splashed water and perhaps a sting to the arms of the caretaker. Step 4: Acclimation Complete: After 20 mins. remove crabs from acclimation chamber and serve...err I mean let him loose to continue to become a source of entertainment and sustenance.... & Your done! I hope this has answered your questions on what to do the next time you find hitchhiker crabs your weren't expecting. Any further questions can be answered by your nearest ReefCentral mod who will be more than willing to further explain any of the above procedures..... * Tangs in Terriaki Sauce will be covered next week.... |

Tourkid-- see if you can find your crab here . The only crab I consider reef safe is a porcelain crab. Crabs can behave themselves for a long time, then who knows.

PROPER acclimation process !
Tuna,
You missed some key steps in setting up your quarantine tank. First of all you need to check your salt mix and the other essential CHEMICALS that you use. I would recommend the best available products such as the following: Then I would upgrade my "TANK" size. Notice in the next picture that I have added a lot of "BROWSE" for the tank inhabitants to "PICK" on. Finally I make sure that the "TANK" is of proper temperature before adding any"LIVESTOCK" .

Tourkid.. could you get a picture of your hitchiker? it sound very similar to one I found (about the size of a quarter) he's in my fuge right now until I decide what to do with him.
