biological filter for QT tank

I am in the process of setting up a QT tank. I have some sponges in the main tank "curing" I have heard it takes 4 weeks? Also could I take the bio-wheels out of my Filter and use them, would this be enough?

If the bio wheels have been "working" for a long time and have good colonies of bacteria on them they may work ok. How many fish do you intend on putting in the qt tank? 4 weeks is about right to get a good load of bacteria. It's how I do it. I have not had opportunity to use the sponge filter in my tank yet. In about a month I will.

Regards,

Pat

Sponges curing? Please explain. Depending on the size of the QT and the animal in there the bio wheels if mature will most likely be enough with regular water changes. Make sure to siphon out any uneaten food.

I will be moving 2 small clown perculas and 3 chromis from a 55 gallon to a 20 gallon QT. I think I will move 2 and then wait a week and move the other 3? I'm scared moving 5 all at once may be too much. I am planning on leaving the main tank fishless for 6 weeks. Move due to ich. I haven't decided on hypo or Cupramine yet.

If the quarantine tank has been empty and unfed the whole time, it might not have much filtration capacity. You could to test that by feeding a bit of fish food and seeing what the ammonia level does.
