TDS and storage containers

I'm always very careful to check my TDS as I'm making water, but never checked it after it's been in the container for a few days or a week. For some reason, today I decided to check water that has been stored for 5 days. I use the red plastic gasoline cans, have had them for 4 years and have never had anything in them except water. I used to put salt water in them, but they've been strictly ro/di for a couple years. My TDS coming out of my ro/di is 0. However, when I checked the water in the containers, it came back as 6.

I'm just wondering if something got into the container, or if it's possible something is leaching out of the plastic. Thoughts?

Thx,

Aaron

yes its the container. the plastic used for gas cans is not "food grade". that means it leaches chemicals into what ever is in it. may be a good idea to run down to the local walmart and pick up some water containers. they have some that are under $10.

DI water is active and readily absorbs anything.

I bought a corner stone , rhino-tuff trash can to hold my r/o water for top-off. Do you think that this could be detrimental to my tank?

My RODI water goes into a 30 gallon RubberMaid container. No problems that I can see from it's use.

theres some codes on the bottom of the can like PP, PE, or PPE something like that. if you find them make a post in the Chemistry forum Randy should be able to give you a better answer on that one. a basic test is after you rinse good(no soap), stick your head in and if you can smell a heavy plastic or chemical smell its not good. but thats not aways the case nor the best test . ask Randy.
