Water Movement?
what is the best way to provide enough water movement for a 65 gallon mixed reef? I don't want it to be too visible. Any ideas? How much flow would i need? I want to keep some of everything
Thanks |

Closed loop with a strong pump and some Wavyseas for the "I do not want to see the pumps" crowd. Otherwise, Tunze Streams are awesome.

Go to www.melevsreef.com for some info about closed loops.
There's a Tunze Forum here in RC Forums and you can post your question there for an answer to your question. But, for a 65-gallon tank, if you're willing to see them, I'd try two Seio 820s, which along with the flow from your sump return, should give your reef a good quality flow. Tunzes are, without a doubt, superior but, you can place them on a controller, but you'd see that just as much as the Sieos and it a whole lot more expensive. On the other hand, I just read in these Forums, that Seio is releasing a controller or has already.

A tunze 6000 with single controller would be ample flow when coupled with your sump returns or a maxijet to create turbulance. The amount of flow will be determined by what you want to keep. High flow for SPS and medium flow for softies and LPS. I consider medium flow a turnover of 15 times the tank volume to 40 times the tank volume. High flow 40+ times tank volume.
A closed loop is usually plumbed into a tank by drilling the back panel of the tank so that there is a drain to a pump. From there the return is spliced into the amount of diferent returns you want. Many people have hole drilled for the returns as well. A closed loop can also be done by hanging a pump from the back of the tank and having returns over the top. No drilling necessary, but you must not let the syphon break. |

The only drawback to Seios is that they have a tendency to not restart after power outages.

I know that a lot of people have trouble restarting Seios....I have three going on my reef. I turn them on and off pretty frequently for feeding, water changes, etc. and I literally never had one fail to resart...ever. They're all on the same switch. I can say that I've tried Rios, which are made by the same company as the Seios are, and they never ever restarted and junked them immediately. Those are the worst, but the Seios have really served me well. Like I mentioned, they are releasing, if they haven't already in the last few days, a controller for them.

I plan on keeping soft corals in my 65 gallon. I have three Maxijet 1200's running on a wavemaker.

If you want to improve the flow coming from Maxijets....put Hydor flo deflectors on them. I find that it really does a lot of good.

That being said, just know, the suggested CL with wavy seas is going to probably cost you well over $1000. And an extra $20+ a month in electricity. $200 pump $500 (2 x wavy sea) $200 assorted valves, unions, etc. |
