yes but adding anything will contribute. stripp nutrient levels is a cure all. this means reduce excess food....basically start feeding every other day light.
also phos. levels need to be checked...whats the source of your top off? tap? stop that
ro? check the hardness of the product water to see if filters are still ok in unit.
water changes reduce all levels but phos. esspecially if source is full of it. and thus grows algea.
levels
ammonia has to be zero'ed
nitrite zero'ed
nitrate zero'ed
phos zero'ed
cure all ...........if not zero'ed will be a reaccuring issue.

While I agree generally, nutrient levels must be at zero. Red Cotton Candy Algae will apear in tanks with NH4, NO2, NO3, PO4 levels at zero as it did with mine.

My tank was a few years old and I have allways had NH4, NO2, NO3, PO4 at zero and I suddenly got Red Cotton Candy Algae. After some research I found that it wasn't like other nuisance algae and could survive in nutrient free conditions. I also found that Mexican Turbo's were what people were having the best success with and they worked for me too.

As reefD mentioned if you don't have your nutrient levels inline you will have all sorts of problems.

Here are some pics of what I had Asparagopsis AKA Red Hair Algae or Red Cotton Candy Algae. Just to confirm, I just looked in my Algae book and it has 8 different types of Red Algae.
