Really easy HOB Overflow
Hey guys,
I was looking around on the internet today and found this really easy HOB overflow. I need an overflow for my 60gal and was wondering if this one looks like it will work. http://www.reefs.org/diy/index.html |

Yes.
Don't put the tube on the top. When you need to start it, fill up the front and the back box. Get a piece of airline hose and snake it up to the top of the U-tube. Then you can just suck on the airline hose until there is no air left in the U-tube.. |

Unless you are looking to build something for fun, it'd probably be cheaper to buy a used one, IMO. You can find cheap HOB filters for $20 or $30 in the buy/sell/trade forum usually.

As above, skip the vinyl tubing on the top. Also, 3/4" U Tube and drain is for a low flow setup.

For a 60 gal, I would probably go with a 1" drain to the sump. I think with a 3/4" you will not get the flow that you desire.

Why not leave the tube on top and connect it to a maxijet venturi input, that way if it were to shut off the maxijet would reprime the tube. Or use an aqualifter pump from Marine Depot. I used to use a double tube one for my tank and had both tubes connected and a maxijet 1200 would reprime my Utubes in case it were to lose siphon during a loss of electricity.

I used an overflow to get water to my sump and I have the airline connected to the maxijet venturi like KH971 said. position the airline at a 45 degree angle away from the tank because as the u-tube starts to prime itself the remaining air bubbles will start to travel with the waterflow. I have the maxijet pump that I use for priming the overflow and the sump pump on the same power strip. This makes it easy for me to shutdown and restart. I don't suck saltwater any more.

I wish I could post pics. I take a lot of pictures of my set up but I don't know how to post them. I'm IT challenged.

When you click reply, go down to where it says attach file. Look over to the right and it tells you how to post an image.
