fighting back against retailers and dyed anemones
As this hobby expands more and more, i see to frequently local shops and online venders selling "rare" color morphs of our favorite anemones. Not only is this stressful to the animal, but it is a blatent lie to the consumer. Bad information about anemones will always be a problem, but purposefully misleading someone into thinking they are getting something they are not should be, and is in any other case, a crime.
I visited one fellow reefer in the chicagoland area (he shall remain nameless) who tried to sell me a dyed pink/purple sebae w/ skunk clown for 250.00!! He insited it wasnt dyed, and i still to this day do not even think he realized it. A year later i wonder what color it is now, if it even lived. My LFS that i frequent refuses to order anymore anemones in due to the amount of dyed specimines he receives when he does. By supporting the ethical buisnesses in the trad, I know this is one way i can help fight this wave in fraud. Perhaps, we as an online community should list off known LFS that sell dyed anemones so that we as consumers can make a far more educated choice when we see "rare" color mophs. Or, better yet, just list the shops you know to be reputable, so there is no finger pointing. My good LFS here in South Bend, IN area is midwest corals. I encourage all to do the same! Perhaps make this thread sticky even. |

I don't know if that is a good idea. Often an LFS gets in dyed anemones when they order natural color morphs. The ethical thing to do is to inform the consumer but, good help is hard to find and I'd hate to see a reputable fish store get a bad rep because one uninformed employee gives out bad information one time.
