Purple Algae On Sand

I have a purple algae growing on the sand. Doesn not look like any thing is growing out of it as of yet. I plan on removing it unless I hear other wise. Please let me know.

Is this just a film on the sand? If so, it's likely cyanobacteria, and removing it is a fine idea.
