wet/dry filter with base rock instead of bio balls?

i was just wondering if i could make the same design where water trickles over the media, but it's rock instead of plastic? this could cancel out the nitrates that comes off of smoothe objects

just a thought

I have done this before using live rock. If you can adjust the w/d so it holds the rock under water that is even better.
