lowest heat transfer in sump pump

Hello everyone!

I have a mag5 that's been in service as a return pump for long enough to be considered for replacement. I was wondering if an eheim would result in less heat transfer to the water than the mag is. To anyone who has switched, what temperature differences did you find? Also, which Eheim model would you recommend for a return pump on a tank with a 1" drain. Ok, one more question, Would I get even less pump heat transfer if I used an Iwaki 20 externally?

Thanks for the help!

An Eheim 1250 would probably be similar in flow and uses only 28W. A 1260 would have MUCH stronger flow.

The Eheim pumps are much more energy efficient than the mags and I highly recommend them. I did the switch myself a couple of months ago and am very happy with the difference. The 1250 will give you about 200 GPH at 4' of head pressure and will probably be a good match for your smaller tanks. I would run it internally.

The Iwaki is a completely different ball game. It is externally cooled (less heat transfer) and extremely reliable but quite noisy. If I was setting up a system with a remote sump then I would want to use and Iwaki high pressure pump. For an under the tank sump I wouldn't even consider it.

Red Dragons if for no other reason than they typically have the best wattage/flow ratio. However they are also typically 5x the cost of any other options.

Eheim otherwise.

Yes an external small iwaki is much cooler and unfortunately wryknow is wrong. The small iwakis have no fans and therefore are essentially silent. Iwakis 40 and up have fans and generate noise. The 20 and 30 are typically (if nothing is wrong with 'em) essentially silent. Similarly the panworld/blueline hd small pumps are also essentially silent. With external pumps you have to watch out for the fans--those are the noise generators.

Eheim is a very good pump for the return.
