Deep sand bed in overflow

I am planning on putting a standpipe in my overflow so the overflow water dosen't have such a long distance to fall. It will make it quiter. What do you guys think about putting live sand to creat a deep sand bed or live rock below the stand pipe? Below is a link where I got the Idea for a standpipe. Thanks

I would suggest NOT doing that, as the sand will just get dirtier and dirtier as stuff flows into the overflow and never leaves!

Better to keep it empty, so that you can SEE if it gathers stuff.

Mine got choked in pink-fuzz algae, so a mexican turbo snail became the lone inhabitant of the overflow! (big enough to not enter the overflow standpipe). It's now also full of aiptasia.

i dont think i would put anything in there that could trap detritus.

A DSB in a small area like the overflow with not benefit you in any way.

Also if you ever have a problem and need to remove the bulkhead you are going to have a big mess.

Its not like DSB-ers have ever posted stuff like that on any BB threads.

Anyways, I'd leave your overflow empty. Trapping detritus is a bad thing.

Thanks for the input. The question was not about BB vs DSB but it looks like it started a fight.

I think the best point made was the question on what happens if you have to remove the standpipe for any reason...the sand will make it very hard/messy to do!

My advice is to not do it. Any perceived benefit (DSB?) is far outweighed by the negatives (traps crap, makes plumbing maintenance a nightmare!)
