ID please (coral? anemone?)

I am new to SW tanks, and I'm about a week and a half into my cycle. I just bought a few pounds of live rock to put in my tank, and i've noticed little isopods cruising around the rock and what not, but i looked one of the rocks a little while ago and saw some little tentacles reaching out, so i snapped a few photos.

Its about half the size of a dime. It was much more open when i first saw it, but i turned on the light to get some better shots of it, and it very slowly sucked back into itself. I got 3 pictures of it. the one that shows it the most exposed is about half of how open he was. Any ideas what it is?

Ball Anemone

I've got a poopload in my 45g mantis tank. Really not a true anemone, but a mushroom. Reef safe.

It's an anem, not aptasia. I have them---they are only visible at night, correct?

whew. thank god. the ball tip anemone is exactly what it looks like. thought i had to deal with aiptasia already.

so with this being able to grow and still be living, is this a sign that my water might be in somewhat good condition? or do these guys still come up with the water isn't that safe...

Mostly at night, but I have a golfball size rock under a ledge that's covered with them, so they come out during the day for me, also.

I pretty sure mine were hitchhikers, so I don't think they are are sign of water condition.

Also try strawberry anemone, for some reason I'm not getting hits with pseudocorynactis.

Very cool, the ones I have are pink. If you feed them reproduce quite well.

You might want to think twice about this. They reproduce just about as quick as Aiptasia and have quite a sting on them. If you are looking to keep an actual reef tank, you are probably better off without these guys But if it is FO/FOWLR, then you are definitely fine and they make a great addition. Be warned, they are quick and eat live food as well. They eat baby mollies like it was no tomorrow. (Long story)

Also, I think the name is Pseudocorynactis caribbaeorum

Orange Ball Anemone- Orange Ball Corallimorph (Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum) these are mushrooms, but a pest. they quickly multiply, and will bother some corals. heres an article towards the bottom http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...002/invert.htm

i use Joes Juice to control mine. i keep a few just for the cool factor .

so will it ruin my display? i want to get corals eventually...

basically i'll have to kill it off ? or will it do much harm. the link you posted says it might kill inverts and shrimp, etc..

I've had them for quite some time, due to the areas they prefer to inhabit, I doubt they would become a nuisance to corals. As far as snatching up copepods and other small inverts thats entirely possible although I doubt it would be enough to effect their population.
