ID please (coral? anemone?)
I am new to SW tanks, and I'm about a week and a half into my cycle. I just bought a few pounds of live rock to put in my tank, and i've noticed little isopods cruising around the rock and what not, but i looked one of the rocks a little while ago and saw some little tentacles reaching out, so i snapped a few photos.
Its about half the size of a dime. It was much more open when i first saw it, but i turned on the light to get some better shots of it, and it very slowly sucked back into itself. I got 3 pictures of it. the one that shows it the most exposed is about half of how open he was. Any ideas what it is? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Ball Anemone
I've got a poopload in my 45g mantis tank. Really not a true anemone, but a mushroom. Reef safe. HTH

It's an anem, not aptasia. I have them---they are only visible at night, correct?

whew. thank god. the ball tip anemone is exactly what it looks like. thought i had to deal with aiptasia already.
so with this being able to grow and still be living, is this a sign that my water might be in somewhat good condition? or do these guys still come up with the water isn't that safe... |

Mostly at night, but I have a golfball size rock under a ledge that's covered with them, so they come out during the day for me, also.

I pretty sure mine were hitchhikers, so I don't think they are are sign of water condition.

Also try strawberry anemone, for some reason I'm not getting hits with pseudocorynactis.

Very cool, the ones I have are pink. If you feed them reproduce quite well.

Orange Ball Anemone- Orange Ball Corallimorph (Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum) these are mushrooms, but a pest. they quickly multiply, and will bother some corals. heres an article towards the bottom http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...002/invert.htm
i use Joes Juice to control mine. i keep a few just for the cool factor ![]()

I've had them for quite some time, due to the areas they prefer to inhabit, I doubt they would become a nuisance to corals. As far as snatching up copepods and other small inverts thats entirely possible although I doubt it would be enough to effect their population.
