Green Star Polyps
Not sure if this is the proper forum but...
I'm having problems getting my recently purchased green star polyps to come out. 3-4 will pop out but not the whole colony... Any ideas. I placed them at the bottom and have moved them a couple of tims trying to pick a good place. Any thoughts on flow and lighting. MH 70w HQI in a 24g AquaPod - Many other corals doing nicely. |

I had this colony for about 7yrs.
When I first got it it took about a week before all of the polyps emerged. Medium light and current.

Pick a spot and leave them alone for awhile, It just takes them time to settle in. Sometime it takes weeks or more.
Then everyonce in a while they will close up again for a period of time. I've had mine for a year and right now they have been closed for about 3 days. It kind of make you wonder if something is wrong. But after a while they come back out. Who know what they are doing. LOL |

Mainly just put some current on in thier area about low to medium. When I got mine they only opened up one at a time so have patience. How long have they been in your Aquarium?

Make sure, too, that there's no hair algae obstructing the polyps from opening---They like, indeed, medium light and flow.

will GSP grow onto the sand? Becuase right now i have a frag placed on a rock all alone in between the two rocks island in my tank and i do not want it to spread to the rock piles. The only way to do that however would be to grow accross the sand.
Mike EDIT* sorry for the hijack |

Try blowing them off with a turkey baster. I have noticed that when my GSP get a little stressed from a tank cleaning, or larger water changes, it gets a very light mucous type of coating on it and wont fully open for a while. It has helped if i blow it off a little, and it will usally open up within a few hours. Cant hurt to try it.
I learned this technique from my leather corals. This happens quite a bit with leathers as well. They can slime up if stressed. Good luck.........Herbie |

They must still be stressed. They have only been in the tank a few days and I have moved them twice....
I added about 9 new frags after a frag swap and all others seemed to be doing pretty well, I guess I was expecting too much to soon from them. I will leave them ALONE! I did blow them off with some light flow from a powerhead. I have a new Frogspawn that is not looking its best yet either:0

That's the best bet, let them sit & adjust. When they no longer feel "threatened" they will extend their polyps. I imagine some fish feed on these, hence the retraction when they sense movement
And for those that wonder what will grow & not be affected by GSP PSP - Pink Star Polyps!! For the most part they will KILL anything they come in contact with. They will eventually grow over almost any other coral. They re-grow from slime that you can't even see Loose polyps can float around your tank I still have some on my overflow, when they grow onto the glass I trim it back. They can grow across sand by making a matt But it is easily controlled on sand |

ha I just boiled a rock of Xenia as have had it with them. I was considering putting the GSP in the pot too.
I cannot get rid of these pests as I scrape/ peal them off every few weeks and they keep spreading.
