time question on hypo treatment

|I'm treating the main tank with the hypo method. I took all the LR out, but left the sand/gravel. How long should I wait before |I bring the salt level back up? The LR is in my refug (which is now separted from my main tank). I know I need to wait 6 weeks on that tank.

I would run the hypo for at least 4-6 weeks to make sure you have broken the life cycle of the parisite assuming you are treating for ick...

I agree, minimum of 4 weeks. Are there fish in it? I've been told to wait until no more white spots are visible on the fish, then start the 4 to 6 week timer. Took my coral beauty about 5 or 6 days to be spot free using hypo.

I'd say 5-6 weeks to be safe. In the worst case scenario, a newly hatched ich theront (the phase where hypo interrupts the life cycle) found a fish in the tank just before you reached theraputic hyposalinity levels. It could reside in the fish for as many as 7 days, then drop off (1 day) and enter its reproductive stage, which can last as long as 28 days. That's ~36 days in the worst case scenario. Of course, the average life cycle is faster than that, but this should cover even the outliers.

I don't have the reference, but I remember reading of a study that showed that in cold water (much below reef tanks) ich's life cycle can be considerably longer, and there can be alot of variability in the length. What this suggests is that keeping the QT temp in the upper end of the normal range may help ensure that ich is eradicated in a reasonable time. I generally quarantine about 8 weeks. That's a week or so to quit seeing any white spots and to get down to hypo and then about 6 weeks of hypo treatment and finally about a week to bring the SG back up to NSW levels.

Remember, patience is a virtue.
