Anybody Ever Hear of This?

Today I got a small Yellow Tang, he was about the size of a silver dollar. He went in the tank and all was great. We went to dinner and came back to find him stuck to the intake of my Seio 600 powerhead and dead.

I know the powr heads could be a problem with Anemones but I never thought the little slots that the water comes in from on it would capture a fish and kill it.

Has anyone ever heard of this? What do I do about this when I replace him. I feel really bad, he looked so healthy and was only with me for a few hours.

Yeah its common. I know some people that had it happen to. A lot of customers, I then show them where the sponge filters are that connect to the power heads so it wont happen again.

Do you have any other fish in the tank? Sometimes, they get worn out by being chased around or accidentally get too close to the pump, but bottomline is, that doesn't happen to healthy fish.

I actually do have two very small clowns, one sleeper goby and a four lined wrasse. Nobody seemed to be paying any attention to him all afternoon, so I would wonder about his being chased.

He appeared healthy, he was hiding a little today, but they all do that at first so I wasn't concerned.

Do they make sponges are something for the Seio's that anyone knows of.

AquaReeferMan - if it is common why don't you show them where the sponges are before it happens?

My silver dollar sized yellow tang got stuck in my 820. Did you have the flow turned down a bit? When you do that, the Seio sucks from just two slots on the top, and creates a ton of suction in a little spot. Bad news for little guys. My tang actually survived, and is still going strong now six months later. If you have the flow turned down, I would just turn it all the way up, that way it sucks from all the way around the Seio, and the suction in one spot isn't as strong.

My LFS does have a guarantee, but they would probably say the powerhead killed it, don't you think?

That's what I'm thinking too...."warranty does not cover powerhead accidents"

Well I wish I could. I only work there 2 days a week(cleaning tanks/doing fish orders). Its hard to catch everyone before it happens. Usually when people buy powerheads they come with the sponge, and a lot of people just throw them away untill a fish get sucked in.

No sponge on mine as far as I know. Do you know if the Seios come with a sponge?

Like the above said, turn them back up to full flow. Thats the only solution.

I have the 820s, that are about the same size, and move more water. My cleaner shrimp sit on top of them and dont get sucked in.

I'd say the tang probably wastn in good shape to start with.

As far as I know it is up to full flow. I didn't change the flow when I get it. How can I tell how the flow is set?

if you look at the slots around the base, look to see if the entire hole is open, when its on reduced flow you will see only a partial opening.

When I got my 820's, they were set around 50%, and a turbo snail quickly got sucked in, after I opened it up all the way, my turbos now walk all over it without any problems.

Sorry for the loss
