New Lights

I just replaced my eight PC's with 4 T5's and 3 MH. The lighting is so much different. A friend told me not to leave the lights on very long that the change would shock my corals. Is this true or not?

It is true, you've increased the light amount by a great deal. There are a couple of ways to go about this. Limit the photoperiod, raise the lights, or put window screening between the tank and the lights.
