AquaMedic OceanLight Plus owners

I just received my 24" Oceanlight Plus (250w HQI + 2x24W T5 Actinics).

It's a great fixture, but it is really making my tank run hot.

I'm running it a full 12" above the tank, and I have to run a cheapo house fan across it the whole time it's on to keep the temp < 82.

I am thinking I will need to add some fans to this. There's lots of room in there (I am going to put some moonights in this wknd).

I am pretty sure that I saw some pictures of the longer Aquamedic fixtures and they had fans installed in the fixture. Can anyone tell me the size and orientation of the fans?

Should I run a couple smaller ones on each end or maybe run a couple bigger ones vetically - moving air upwards?

My tank is a 32g Finnex m-tank - I am expecting my new custom 50g acrylic in the next month. The new tank will be 4" taller than the M-Tank (which is 18").

Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know that fans inside the fixture will do as much good as having some small fans blowing between the water and the fixture. I run mine 8 inches off the water and can control it with one small clip on fan on top and one in my sump. My tank stays steady at 79.

Thanks for the feedback. What diameter of fans are you using?

Don't put fans inside the fixture, you don't want air blowing across double ended halide bulbs. Like the previous poster said, fans blowing between the fixture and the water are your best bet. I use two 120mm PC fans on my 90g tank.

That's good intel, thanks.

But I'm curious - why are the fans bad for the DE halides?

It can cause their spectrum to shift and shorten bulb life.
