Cool new program for reef geeks…

Hi Guys/Girls:

My friend and I just finished writing a simple program to check your Reef Central PMs at a set interval and notify you when you have a new message. This is a FREE program and was mostly written by my friend Steve Zembek (I helped a little). Anyway to install it just download the file and accept all of the installation defaults. Once you have finished installing it go to your desktop and click on the icon it created. Enter your username and password and click login. If you check the Remember box the program will store your password on your computer so you don’t have to type it each time. Your password will be encrypted so don’t worry. After that you can change the interval the program checks for new messages and click update. Next just minimize the window and it will put itself in the system tray in the bottom right corner of the screen. The program will only notify you if you have a new message. Once the program is minimized you can right click on the icon in the system tray to edit the options or check for new messages. Try it out and let me know how cool/dorky I am when you get a chance…

I don't want to rain on your parade, cause it sounds like you (and your friend) put a lot of effort into this. Why is this better than receiving an e-mail notification from RC when you get a PM ?? I use this today and am notified within a short time of receiving a PM.

I guess this would be good if you couldn't check your home e-mail while at work (or a similar situation).

Good question…

My personal email does not automatically notify me when I receive a new email unless I have my email window open. Since I am at work all day I don’t like to have my personal email open for obvious reasons. Reef Watcher is a discrete icon in the system tray that pops up small message letting me know I have a new PM. Another reason is that I don’t like getting all of those messages in my inbox from reef central each time something happens. I don’t use the reef central notifications. I am notified almost instantly when I receive a PM. I like that since I use my PMs primarily for important messages about buying/selling/trading. I guess another reason to use it would be because it’s cool. When the notification comes up it provides you a link to click on that takes to directly to the PM. Have you tried it out yet?

I realize some people may not find this very useful but it really didn’t take a lot of time at all…

Looks like so far consensus = dork…

I am glad so many people are trying it out. I have been using it for months and then I thought why not share? Also Keith that blue tenius I bought from you is coloring up great under my 400w Radiums. Thanks for the frag and for the recommendation on the lights. It’s all starting to come together now. I hope to get a new camera in the next few weeks so I can take some photos. My old camera doesn’t like the new super bright lights…

Nate (Dork and proud of it )
