Low cost upgrades
I haven't been able to find a good list of low-cost upgrades for marine aquaria. Something people could go through when they had a little bit of extra money to spend and pick out something to do. Let's set the limit at $100.

This looks like a really interesting thread! ![]() I'll definately be watching this one - good idea, like - for people starting with a small/medium FOWLR (40-60g) - that would eventually like to go reef - what can be added to upgrade it slowly (cuz of $$ and low budgets) - what is a good order? what are some low cost options, yet efficient (for lights? RO/DI?) but also considering an upgrade to a larger tank eventually? Not to hijack the thread - but, maybe just pushing it along more! ![]() |

Great idea to include prices so you can pick something off that fits your budget.
My list looks like this (I have done all these): 1. Quarantine tank ($10 tank + $20 filter + $10 heater + $5 PVC pipe + $2 thermometer) = $50 2. Alkalinity test kit ($15) + buffer ($10) = $25 3. Calcium test kit ($25) + additive ($15) = $40 4. Refractometer ($50) 5. Power filter to put carbon in (and seed Q-tank media) ($20) 6. Rubbermaid sump ($30 for me, since I replaced a wet-dry. If you didn't have the overflow and pump, this would be ~$200) 7. Extra flow ($30 x number of powerheads to add) I have a PhosBan reactor on order. We will see if it is worthy of the list. I also ordered a bulkhead to turn my old wet-dry into a refugium. |
