Fire + Reef = Not Good!

Well, I'm done with power compacts. The third bulb caught fire yesterday. This is the third bulb in 3 different systems to catch fire. The first one was probably avoidable; I had a 65W pc on a 29g that was retrofitted into the hood. I should have put silicone around the connection to the bulb, but didn't think about it because it's an aquarium fixture; Thought it would be waterproof from the factory! I've since paid close attention to things like that, but evidently it wasn't enough....

Here's a pic.....thank God it didn't get worse. The plastic strip next to it is the cover that goes over the BRAND NEW fixture to keep water from splashing on the bulb......this fixture was totally enclosed, safe from water splashing. Dunno what happened, but I'll never spend $$$ on pc anymore. I'm going VHO from now on.....

I too have had them crack numerous times, but no fire thank goodness....both at the base and at the connection part between the two tubes. Why do they get so "brittle"??!!

Sorry about your experience Bkndsdl

Yea I am also intrested in the manufactor. Sorry to hear about your near miss. Do you have a GFI? Would a GFI help this situation? I have had many PC smoke, fizzle but then the bulb goes out. But nothing like that.

p.s. I too think VHO is better but I have had a VHO start on fire too, and fry the ballast at the same time :-/

That Happened to me last march, only not nearly as bad. I came down stairs to the smell of burning....went to the 110gallon and opened the hood to see sparks flyin...
