Question Found three Mantis in m y new Nano - What to do?

I just finished setting up a new nano tank and noticed three little mantis shrimp swimming around the tank. What should I do? Can these harm anything? Why do they have such a bad rep?

I am only planning on keeping mushrooms and maybe some Xenias and a Firefish om this tank.

Thanks!!!

Once the mantis get bigger, they'll prey on any fish you put in the tank and will probably prey on you every time you stick your fingers in there! They can be very nasty to other livestock. If you don't want to keep any fish, you could be okay leaving them in there. Otherwise, remove them as soon as you can!

I won't be putting any fish in this little nano for a while, and there isn't much rock in there right now, so it shouldn't be hard to get rid of them. How? With my hand? They are about 1/4 inch in size.

Any comments?

You don't want to grab them with your hand - they have a powerful left hook that could leave you in pain!

Though I have never done it I would presume a fish net would probably work if you could catch them in it. I also know they make specific mantis traps for catching the ones that are too difficult the normal way.

I've seen pictures of peoples' fingers sliced open from mantis shrimps attacking their finger. I would not take them lightly, no matter what size they are. I've also read that the whacking variety (vs. the spearer variety) regularly break pieces of rock off with their club arms, and have broken through plastic cages. Don't underestimate them and play it safe. Good luck! They're smart little buggers!

I have heard reports that mantis can break tank glass if they strike it just right

Are you sure they are mantis shrimp? You usually do not see them swiming around in a tank.

Can you get a pic?

well the three "mantis shrimp" died. You see, what happen was that I just setup a nano tank, using some sand from both my saltwater tank and some live rock from my reef tank. When I added the live rock to the tank I noticed that suddenly some three little guys the size of a 1/4 or maybe bigger started floating and swimming. They did look like small mantis. I checked the SG and it was at 1.32. So this might have killed the Mantis shrimp, and this might explain why they were swimming about. They did not like the SG I guess. Anyways....

You got three mantis shrimps? Not bad they go for about
30 or 50 $ each. Mantis shrimps will not harm corals
soft or hard. They will kill and eat almost anything else.
Check out the fourm on RC. The L/R I got came with one.
Set it up in a 12 gal aqua pod. More than worth the time.
Great house keeper.lots of personality. dbr

In a Clint Eastwood voice - I once seen a mantis shrimp take a man's head off.

They sound like amiphods to me. If so your SG probably killed them. Amiphods are good for aquariums and fish will readily feed on them.

They are BAD! If you can find the rock they live in take it out and dip it in fresh water, the shrimp should fly out of the rock then you can put your rock back in the tank. Make sure there are no corals on the rock.
