Quietening an overflow

HI all, im getting really frustrated with the noise my overflow makes, how can i quiet it down. (this is my first tank with a sump)

i have been told two options:
1.fill the overflow chamber with bioballs or other media
2. create a durso stand pipe.

how does each exactly work (pros and cons please)

heres currently what i got that may help:

24x24x30 BB cube with internal corner overflow.
deltec MCE600 skimmer
i do not have a filter!

What kind of an overflow are you running? If it is an external durso, make sure you have it set up like this with a small hole in the top cap.

reefman, that is not a "durso" or "stockman". The "end cap" and "tee" setup you have drawn does nothing, as the air will be allowed to enter via the strainer. If air does not enter via the strainer, then your running a siphon, and that is dangerous.

The "strainer" portion needs to have a down turned elblow to prevent air from entering the standpipe and causing a gurgling. The air that enters at the cap prevents a full siphon, and allows the intake to run a lot quiter.

I hope this helps.

Yeah I think so. Just as long as you have room for it in the overflow box. Sometimes those things are pretty tight for space.

You can also try a Stockman standpipe. Same concept, but fits easier in the HOB overflows. Check it out here.
