Do mexican turbosnails always die?

So between my brother in law and I, the survival rate on turbo snails is about 0%... Do we both have really crappy tanks? Our test kits don't test alkalinity or calcium, but ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite are 0, and pH is usually around 8. Other livestock survives fine-- neither of us have lost any other livestock since cycling.

I believe they are for coldwater tanks.

How long do they stay alive for?
I don't have any problems with them in my tank.

Coupla weeks, usually. One of mine made it 2 months before he kicked the proverbial bucket.

I started with 4 big turbos 10 months ago because of an algae problem, 2 of them died. 1 at about 5 months, the other at about 7 months. I just assumed they starved since I have had no algae since the initial outbreak.

Well when I converted my Dads 55 fresh to salt I had purchased the live rock from Tampa and drove back to my Dads and set his tank up. Well without my knowledge or the guy I bought the rock off there was a Mexican Turbo (huge snail) that was hidden within the rock. Well it survived the cycle and is still alive to this day over 5 months later... Thats the only experience I've had with Mexican Turbos.

I should clarify and say that they survival rate in my tank after 3 weeks is zero.

I've had my one for 6 months now. I think people try and keep too many of them.

And they like to be on the glass more than the rock it seems, so make sure you have enough soft algae on your glass.

I have had 3 turbos and was wondering this same thing.. I did some research and noted they were from cooler waters but many said they were doing fine in their tanks. My tank temps have been up to as high as 83 or 84 degrees and never below 79. After I lost my last turbo I installed fan in the sump and have been monitoring temps for a few weeks. I now range from 77 at night to 80.4 in the day. Does anyone know what the maximum temp for these snails is? I don't want a ton but would love to keep a single snail alive and health. ( heck I'd even target feed the bugger )

Your tank is a 15 gal, right? Might not be enough for them in there, mine died in my nano too, crabs would eat them also, because there wasnt much else to graze on in such a small area...what size is your brothers tank?

Those I have kept have seemed fairly hardy. Have about a half of a dozen in my 55 right now. In fact, the only one I have lost managed to get himself suck in a powerhead intake overnight.

Is there any chance you tank may have ever been treated with copper?

I think so.

I know he had freshwater, and undoubtedly he used some form of ich treatment at one time or another. Surely there couldn't still be copper in there, though. Tons of people convert freshwater over to salt water, and have no problems. Also, why would the copper *only* affect turbo snails?
