Spider Living In Tank!!!!!
What the F*$&??? I was just adding water to my tank when I noticed a small spider about the size of a pencil eraser or slightly bigger. Sorry I don't have a picture but he was fast and got away before I could catch him or snap a pic. He was crawling around on the rock and went down instead of up which leads me to believe that he might be living there and not just trapped.
Anyone ever heard of anything like this? He is in my sump. Help!!! Ben

I doubt it is an sort of true aquatic spider (as in some of the marine "diving" spiders) since they must breathe air. Chances are, you saw a Pycnogonid--a sea "spider." While they are somewhat closely related, they are a different animal altogether. Most suck the juices out of cnidarians and hydrozoans through a sharp proboscis.

so this is bad huh? I read the article (thanks) but didn't see anything that looked like what i have. Im wondering if its a regular house spider that could have been holding its breath. If its not... .Does anyone know how i could get rid of it besides physically removing it (not an option). Do you think my six line wrasse may eat it?
Ben

I have had common house spiders get into my basement refugium before, upon close examination there was always an air bubble around it. They never lasted long before floating dead, maybe a day or so, but they would move around under water fine.
