Never give up on a fighting conch
About six weeks ago I posted a comment about my fighting conch having been missing for about a month. A couple of weeks later, I located a bit of its shell sticking out of the substrate where I had thought it was buried. I just assumed it was dead as it had been missing for over two months.
Lo and behold, yesterday it comes out of the sand and starts crawling around. Now I'm wondering how it survived. I would have thought it would starve in that time. Maybe he was coming out at night or something. Moral of the story...fighting conchs can apparently be MIA a long time and still be alive...

Mine dissapears for a few days at a time. They like to bury them selves in the sand. I am pretty sure they are eating while buried down there.

They are eating, down there. They eat a lot. They're the best sand-cleaner going. Hilda the Fighting Conch disappeard during a cyano outbreak. I replaced her with a Tongan Fighting Conch, and lo and behold, Hilda immediately showed up again. She works the sand in the front of my tank, and shows up fairly often now. I was told that one of them might starve. I must have dirty sand, because they're both healthy.

I have two scarlet hermit crabs and one of them ate my conch on the first day I put the conch in the tank. Is there any way to prevent this from happening again? I really want a conch as a clean-up crew.

I have a fighting conch as well who disappears for a few days at a time. She seems to always reappear and seems to be quite healthy. There is much fish poo as I have a rather large juvenile emperor angel as well as a few other fish in my 125.

I've had 3 conchs over time and they all will go dormant for a few months, or basically live under the sand, they come up when they want, very hardy creatures that can live off your dsb nutrients for a very long time.
