I have used canister filters before w/ no problem. I would go ahead and use it, just clean it often so there is no heavy detritus build up. Oh also when changing media, replace only half, and the half you keep just rinse in some saltwater

Hi,
I purchased a Cascade 1000 canister for my 75 gallon tank. It's got 3 different compartments for storing media. I put carbon in the bottom, and floss in the others to catch fine particles. My water is very clear, but I do try to change the floss at least once every 2 weeks or so, because it can be a problem when it comes to nitrates. I haven't experienced any problems with it. |

Dont disconnect your sump right away , as the bacteria needs to form in the bio. media of the cannister but have you considered keeping the sump, it is more efficient than cannister filter.

I would not recommend adding a cannister filter to your reef tank. They will collect detrius and contribute to the build up of nitrates. You are better off with a sump in most cases. Can you explain what issues you are having with your sump maybe we can help? IMO, the cannister filter should only be used intermittently to run media such as carbon but not as a continuous long term filtration device.
