What plant/algae is this?
I found this in my 1 week-old 55g reef. It came with one of the rocks. Is it beneficial or a pest? I checked out Marc's site and could not ID it. Any help would be great.
thx.

I have it too, it grows very slowly but is really tough. Tried to pull it out and just go some small pieces. If you don't like it I would suggest cuting it out soon.

looks thicker than hair algae to me. Might want to pluck it just to be sure. Most algaes grow like weeds. If you have a fuge, throw it in there. nay herboivores you have will love you.

yes, it is thicker than hair algae. i don't mind the way it looks, especially if it grows very slowly. I'm just worried that it could be a problem. Although I'm planning on getting a blue regal tang. will the fish eat it? will this plant/algae be a problem?

$10 for a bagfull at the LFS.... i'd say it looks like chaeto as well. Get some started in your sump if you have one.

i don't have a sump... should I get rid of it then? If so, what's the best method of plucking them out? Will it do harm in my main tank if I left it?
TIA

Also I just found what appears to be a bubble algae. The tank is so new (one week old 55g with 80lbs cured LR) so there's only one so far? I know this is a pest algae so can anyone please tell me the best way of removing it? I know not to pop the bubble, but do I use my hands? use a turkey baster to suck it out? Maybe I could take out the rock first from the main tank and extract it from there?

to get rid of the bubble algae what i do is scoop out some water then remove the rock with the algae and place it in the water. then being careful not to burst the bubble just pick it off. this way if it burst you've only contaminated the bucket of water. if you do rupture it just scoop out some more water and give the rock a good rinse before returning it to the tank. |

First one looks like a spindel weed branching out. It wont last long and s not a bad thing. Second is bubble algea, that can cause an outbreak of it in the tank if the spores get into the water column, try to take them off without busting the bubble
