I keep my tank at 80-82 and all I have on it is one little fan for my Metal Halide and PCs. It's already reached in the mid 90's here and a couple days with a heat index of 100 have already went by.

A cheap 6" clip on fan from Wal Mart will keep it at or below 80 if it is blowing across the water surface.

Sounds like you may have other issues.
What size tank? Does it have a sump?
What pumps, how many and circulation methods? Try unplugging the pumps one at a time and watch the temps over a couple hours, you may have a bad pump generating excess heat. Are you rippling the surface with powerheads, returns or a closed loop? You should be.
Glass tops? Enclosed canopy or hood? Open it up if so.
Have you checked the heater? The can fail or read incorrectly.
Does it get any direct sunlight? Shield it from sunlight.

A clip on fan over my sump can cool my tank enough to cause the heater to come on, I can't imagine yours wouldn't be the same.

I wish 87 was all I had to deal with. I know we will be getting a couple of weeks where it will be 95-105 for a couple weeks strait out here.....Forcast says it will be in the 90's by the end of the week... For the three summers that my tank has gone though the hottest I've seen the tank get is about 87 or so. I never run the AC in the house when I'm not there, although this may change this year with all the new SPS I have. I've just used fans in the past and evaported a ton of water each day.

Mine is @ 78 and the heaters have to kick in to keep it there. Its in the 90s here today. The AC in the house keeps things cool.

I keep mine around 80, no chiller, no fan, no AC. Seattle weather is very agreeable to reef tanks .

I live in Atlanta. It can get in the 90s outside, but right now my tank has one 150 watt heater on no fans and a decent amount of water surface agitation. My tank varies from 79.5-80.8 degrees F. I'll probably have to flip on the fan around late June.

I am able to keep mine about 78.5-78.7 without a chiller just some fans and the room air conditioner. If you are using fans an Auto Top Off will really help keep your water level from dropping too much. Good luck, Tim

I would start putting your lighting on a "reverse" cycle and running the lights at night when it's cooler out ASAP if you haven't already done so. 84.4 is going to be stressful for your pets especially if the tank temperature is swinging more than 2-3 degrees in a 24 hour period.

ok the tank is actually mine (oceanprincess is my wonderful g/f)
its a 20gallon commodityaxis 1"bulkhead 15gallon ets reef devil sump, 250w 20hqi pendant, external 1100gph return pump, and
a ERcs6-2 reciurc skimmer. So understanding where the heat is coming rom is not really the issue here The real issue is how can
I release the heat without the cost of a chiller?

Where in Canada are you? I'm in Toronto, and it's HOT. It reached 86F (30C) here today. With the humidex factored in, it felt like it was a good deal warmer than that.
We live in an apartment and have to deal with heat from the lower floors, combined with a lousy a/c unit. The house is 82F, all the tanks are between 85-87F right now despite three ceiling fans and smaller fans blowing air across the tanks.

A Wal Mart clip on fan over the sump will do the trick, I will almost guarantee it. It will increase the evaporation tremendously but it will work.
For less than $10 its worth a try. I think you'll be surprised.

1 fan above the tank, one blowing over the sump. Temp right now is 79.0 .... Central air thermostat at 78. Auto top off adds about 1.5 gal per day on my 40 gal. And it was like 99-100 today in gilbert AZ

I second that. It keeps my tank at 80 when its 115 outside.

On another note, this thread is getting hijacked by Arizonans!! I guess we gravitate to the word "hot".
