how to relocate toadstool?

for several months ive kept a toadstool in my small 10 gallon nano tank, it is now huge and out grew the small nano.
i just set up a 55 gallon (few days old) the live rock is going in this afternoon (select fiji from LAquaria)
how long should i wait before adding the toadstool to the 55 gallon? as soon as the cycle is complete? and i get a zero amonia reading? or is that still too soon?
its really an eyesore in the 10g, theres no room for the inverts to move and not much swimming room for my 2 clowns...this puppy has got to go soooooon

I would wait until your tank is fully cycle. toadstool are quite sensitive to any change that can occur.

frederickk is right - wait until the full cycle is complete to add anything and you may want to wait an additional week or so until your 1st algae bloom ends for good measure

I would say wait until you are ABSOLUTELY certain that the cycle is over...then wait another 3 weeks beyond that...before attempting the transfer. You can never be too careful when it comes to corals, especially when transfering to a new tank.

After your tank reaches 0 for the first time in ammonis, nitrite, and nitrates, then add some inverts and see how they do first for a few weeks before you add any corals. The others are right, toadstools can be a little funny. They do not like to be moved once it finds a place that you put it that it is happy. I'm sure that the toadstool will be much happier if you wait it out. Good luck with your new setup.

thnx
its so squished up against the glass i feel bad for it
where i origionally had it, it must have gotten so top heavy that it fell right ontop of my moon favia.
i had to find a new spot for it which wasnt easy in a tiny 10 gallon, but i did find a spot in the sand, but when it opens fully thats when it gets squished between a rock and the glass

If you really think that this is a problem for the toadstool and it's health may be at stake, do you ha ve a friend with a saltwater reef setup that would be willing to house it temporarly until the 55 is ready? Personally, I would not want to move it, but if it's health is at stake, maybe you can rehome it just until your bigger tank is ready. Just a thought.

Pretty common for toadstools to get pretty large ... for the most part they are indestructible and many toadstool owners will cut up their toadstools to keep them appropriately sized for their tanks. The individual pieces will grow up to be large toadstools and you can swap those "frags" with other aquarist, give them away, and often a LFS may give you store credit for them.

You can cut the toadstool just about anywhere and it will do fine. Some will take pieces around the ends/cap .. some will periodically cut the toatstool off its rock (the small piece left on the rock will then grow into another toadstool). No magic forumula. You can do this underwater or take the coral out of the tank ... remember that many corals are exposed to air every day as the tide comes in and out. As previously stated .. toadsools are one tough cookie and your one large toadstool could make a zillion smaller ones if you want to go that route.
