not sure if the fish really know the difference rather then just dark or not.... but they certainly aren't *hurt* by them. They do let *me* see in the tank at night, which has been a great experience. Definately recommend getting as a part of a better lighting *all in one* like unit

I love moonlights and recommend them for enhanced viewing. Cant say much for claims on helping spawning.

But, I will say, dont go out a and spend a fortune on them. You can build a set yourself (www.lebos.com) or even use a set of xmas lights like I do!

I run them on all of mine. Its for more of a night look than actual moonlight functionality on mine. They actual make some of the corals glow in the tank too

How about the luner tracker or is it one in the same to just turn them on and off with a timer? Thanks

i use two pc fans that have 4 blue led's biult in to each. They help with air circulation and give me moonlight. Which btw is awsome. when i cant sleep I come out and stalk the tank. can't do that in total darkness.

I run 4 on my 90 gallon and have situated my "show-piece" coral under them so when they are on the coral really glows nice.

For night entertainment, I absolutely love my moonlights. They are especially helpful for observing if you regularly get home late at night like I do, and they double as a nightlight!

dollarbill - as far as the "lunartracker" stuff, i dont know if ive ever heard any proof on the stages of the moon effecting anything specific in the tank. but it is a cool idea. still, i wouldnt go out and pay out $$$ for something like that.

i recommend using moon lights as purely asthetic at this point. thats just my opinion!

I have a fixture with 2x150W MH, 4x65W PC and 6 dimmable blue LEDs for moon lights. They look great at night. You can observe everything in the tank without startling animals with a flashlight. Also, animals that can see you during the day can't at night so you can get up close without them knowing. Sheesh I need to get a life!

i like blue... it gives a dark rich blue that seems fitting for reef tanks. Cant say anything for white. But you can........ what do they look like?

I grew up only seeing blue moonlights and didn't see the whites until a few months ago, and I definitely like the whites over the blue. The whites look more natural to me because it actually looks like moonlight. And so far, I have yet to experience a blue moon...

everything under the sea appears blue, even sunlight if you're not right at the surface

For those of you using PC parts (I have spared of both the cold cathode and the blue fans) how do you mount and power them? Just mount a spare power supply somewere close to the tank and then drill the parts into your cover?

I'm thinking of using my spare PC parts but am not too keen on putting a PC power supply so close to water.

to power the power supply from a pc, you will need to jump the green and black wire to turn it on.

I just got my Aqualite with blue moonlights and it's sweet!

I would definitely tell you to get a light with moonlights as well. If not for the fish then certainly for the fishkeeper. It has enhanced my enjoyment of my tank...

I prefer the blue since most oceanic light would be blue... but if you're a pureist and were keeping shallow water species then a white moonlight might well be appropriate...
