Chiller Hookup Question
Hello. I am planning on buying the Arctica 1/10hp chiller for my tank. What kind of hose or tubing do I need for the IN and OUT connections? The chiller comes with: 3/4", 5/8" and 1/2" hose elbows. Thanks in advance!

I used 3/4" vinyl tubing on mine. Worked well with the 3/4" output of my return pump and all of the 3/4" hosebard connections I already had.

Thanks Josh. I was just about to ask oneil in his reply above whether or not he used vinyl tubing. Also, what pump are you using? I was thinking of getting a Mag-5 pump. I have a 30g tank. Much appreciated!

just make sure you are in line with the recomended flow though the chiller.

I just run my return line through the chiller. It restricts the flow, but I was diverting flow before installing the chiller. IThis way I use only one pump for return and the chiller. R

also keep in mind that barb fittings reduce the hose pretty drastically

Thanks all for your responses so far. My live rock will be arriving in a coupla days and temperature in the 30g tank averages about 83 degrees f so I would like to bring it dome some. Could you please "critique" my chiller setup? Sorry for the newbness of this but I'm still learning. This site offers a wealth of information!
Basically, here is how I will be setting-up the chiller with my tank: 1. I will be hanging a u-tube(or J-tube?) from the back of the tank and connected to that, some vinyl tubing. This tubing will be connected to the pump sitting on the floor to draw the water from the tank. 2. From the pump, I will connect some more vinyl tubing that leads to the "IN" connector to the chiller. 3. From the chiller's "OUT" connector, more vinyl tubing will be connected to another u-tube or j-tube that also hangs onto the back of the tank to dump the water back into the tank. Does my setup seem feasible? I went to JBJ's website and downloaded the manual for this chiller. I basically modeled this setup using the "connection of outside circulation pump" scenario. Thanks again for your time and have a great day! |

it would be best to use it in a sump but with out a sump that works. just make sure the intake and out put are aprt from each other so you are not pulling cooled water back into the chiller.
also the chiller will emit some heat as well so try and keep it away from the tank.

Good point on keeping the intake and outtake away from each other. I never even thought of that. I'll put them on opposite sides then. Thanks!
