my sump
When I bought my sump, my LFS told be to put a black sponge like filter in between the baffles before my pump. Could this be contributing to my nitrate problem that I have been battling for several months now?

Yes, but unless the sponge is fairly big, that's probably not the case. Are you cleaning it regularly?

I have had the sponge in for about 3 month without cleaning. I took it out tonight and cleaned it for the first time. I have not put it back in yet....kinda of hesitant.
I have had a nitrate problem for about four months now.

I'd just leave it out. I don't think that the sponge is doing much useful, anyway, IMO.

not cleaning that sponge for 3 months is most likely whats giving you the high readings
if your return pump has a black sponge on it.... theres no need for other sponges BUT......... if you do end up putting that sponge back in..... you NEED to clean it every 2 weeks... dont wait longer than that also if your return pump has a sponge on it... clean that every 2 weeks as well
