Think about this. The shore and surf are part of Natures cleaning system. The wave action causes foam like our skimmers. The sand absorbs pollutants and waste like our deep sand beds. The macro algae is found in the surf. All the clean up crew critters we use are from the surf zones. Its natures refugium. That makes sense. Right?

So lets take the beach sand that has been absorbing waste for eons and try to clean it until its dead so we can put it in our mini ecosystems and hope it cleans our tanks for us. I dont know. Why not use the sand from underwater so you get the microbes, worms and bacteria and forget about cooking it clean. Just let it do what nature does best. I know this will work.

I wouldn't.. Think of how much pollution happens 3 miles and in from the shore.. Now think of all the waves bringing that pollution and washing it onto the sand.

Do you really want to put that sand in a closed environment like your fish tank? I hope not

hey if it's good for the ocean it's good for me...

when they capture live rock they go somthing like 30 miles out just to make sure there isn't any pollutants hanging in the rock...

and who knows if cooking it would get fluride, chlorine, mercury, oil, ect. out of the sand

I personally dont like it as i have tried it and had huge algea and diatomic problems. I also dont like the fact that it wont help buffer a tank near as much as aragonite does, but I suppose that a FO with pleny of filtration and a good leaner crew can make it work.

Consider these as just elements.. What happens when you add heat to F, Cl, Hg, etc? Do they change into another element? Or are they still F, Cl, and Hg?

By "cooking" the sand he didn't mean adding heat. Also, you can't change one element to another element. Alchemists tried unsuccessfully for ages. But you can if you have a multi-million dollar cyclotron.
