To Sponge or not to sponge? That is the question

Do any of you guys leave the stock filter sponges in your nano cubes or aquapods? Or do you take them out? And if so what do you put in place of the sponges? Live rock rubble? Poly Filters? Nothing?

I left mine for a while, eventually they get too dirty and they cause nitrate problems. Everyone has different stuff in the back. I just use a wad of filter floss and change it once a week. Works good for me.
