Sponge and Aquaclear 50

I have a 30g Cube with 3 Powerheads 1 AquaC Remora and a Aqauclear just using it for Carbon and watermovement.

The question I have is I currently have the sponge that came with the Aquaclear filter in it and I wash it out with tank water every two weeks. Do you think this will cause any issues with Nitrates?

I check my water parms today
PH8.3
1.023
Alk 5
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
Amon 0

thanks

Chris

Possibly.

I have sponges over the inputs to the powerheads in my anemone tank. I rinse them with fresh water to kill off the bacterial populations. The sponges are annoying to clean (I'm very lazy), but they don't seem to cause any nitrate issues. If yours do, rinsing frequently with fresh water will prevent that, most likely, although that assume that the tank doesn't need the biological filtration that the sponges provide.

How big is the sponge?

That salinity is very low, IMO. I target about 1.026-1.027, which is about average natural sea waters for reef areas.
