Better not. Better water flow and easier to clean algae.

Some like to leave space to clean the grass and vacuum the substrate in hard to get areas, but there is no grave harm in stacking it against the glass. Is the back painted? If it is clear on all sides then you dont want to do that, butif not go for it.

I put my against most of the bank of the tank, leaving the front and sides accesible with my mag float, my back is black and against a wall, so I do not mind if it fills up with coraline algae.

Use "flat" pieces of rock and stack it to the top. Works for me. See gallery. R

It depends, if you have a nice painted background and want to clean it, then don't stack like that. But me, my new tank I forgot to get it painted and now it's already in place. So I'm going to do the same thing as my last time, stack against the back in some places to hide the back glass. As long as you have some good flow going back there and they aren't stacked so tight there is no problem at all. .

Also if you have any rock slide, it can scratch your glass/acrylic.
