which filter?

i currently have an aqua one 2200 canister filter, and it's very difficult to clean. i'm thinking of swapping to a sump/ refugium style filter. Which would you suggest? is it possible to do without having the tank drilled?

How do they work? what stops the water from overflowing the sump when the main tank is above it, and the water is flowing down?

it is possible without having your tank drilled. You can get an overflos box which will hold siphon during a poweroutage but will not drain your if properly setup. I suggest an Amiracle or Lifereef box.

See this link for a diagram of the overflox box. It may help explain how it holds siphon but wont drain your tank anymore than you set it up to.

thanks kraze3. that's a good article.

i found another article at http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-01/gt/index.php which talks about getting a pre existing aquarium drilled. how risky is this?

Well, if the the whole pane blows out during drilling...pretty risky.

I'm not much of a daredevil when it comes to my tank, so I wouldn't try it myself. I've seen guys trying empty tanks and seen the whole glass pane just go *POP*, so the thought of that happening on my full tank is not something I like to think about.

If you do it, make sure you have adequate means to immediately be able transfer everything to another container, and that you have the water available to fill that container.

Otherwise, you could be thinking about a Lifereef overflow tube or swapping your current tank for a reef ready one.
