I would recomend attaching the rocks if possible just to avoid catastrophe (and the look of a rock "pile"). I've found having a combination of things on hand to attach the rock to be handiest. Two-part epoxies work, but take time to set, and sometimes it just never worked right for me. I used arcylic rods where I could, drilling holes with a mason bit, then using the rods with epoxy to attach rocks. I also found black plastic zip ties can help hold pieces together as well. My rock is all Tonga branch, so zip ties have worked the best in my situation.

But when I attached the rocks (outside of tank), I made sure to have the zip ties, aclyric rods, two part epoxy, and super glue gel on hand for whatever the situation needed (and the drill with a mason bit fit to the rods).

This isn't a great picture (taken shortly after setup and transfer of old tank, hence algae), and its from the side, but you can see how I was able to get some pillars and a bridge using the ties, rods and epoxy. Nearly every rock is attached (although in sections in case I need to break it down)
