Does eggcrate leach phosphates?
Just curious,... I added an eggcrate platform (the stuff from lowes used as a light diffuser) with legs made from PVC to my prop system to set some frags on, before this...my system was prestine, after about a day of adding this, there is now some white stringy algae substance hanging off the stand, rock and powerheads. Any ideas. Did a water change and removed the platform just to be safe. It didn't look like your normal new tank syndrome algae but closer to thin stringy snot. (sorry, best way to describe)

Sounds like a small dino outbreak.
Did you stir up areas of your sand bed when putting it in?

No sand bed, this is a bare bottom prop tank, 4'x2'x1'.

That is funny as I set up a sump (that has some egg crate in it) and added some new base rock and I now seem to have a phosphate problem.
Hope it passes soon.

Is it possible to just put them in a 5 gallon bucket full of salt water and let them sit for a while????
Corals dont appear affected but the water quality, yuck. Water is hazy and white stringy algae crap floating around. I bet it is something from the mfg process of the eggcrete. |

Different manufacturers of eggcrate? Have you tested the water for phosphate?

Did you pull all your rock out?
If you didn't keep it submerged it's possible you had some sponge dieoff.

You may have had some dust and crap that you did not notice in the eggcrate. Those items are not stored in the nices places. Even if you washed it off some crap may not have came off and made it in to your tank. A good soak in clean water for a day and scrubbing it before using might help get all the crap out.
