Can I put Chaeto in my actual tank?

I don't have a refugium or a sump for my tank yet but plan to build one soon. My question is would it be beneficial to put some chaeto in the back of my actual reef tank? What would the advantages or disadvantages be?

You can grow and harvest it from the display tank if the lighting is okay. I do that. The downside is that it takes up room. Also, you might not like the looks much. It's easy to remove, though.

Yes, as long as chaeto is in separate container/chamber. Otherwise it will be in the intake tubes and at the bottom, making vacuuming difficult. I have it in transparent soap-holder with suction caps - it grows well, helps with nutrient export and interferes with tank cleaning.

If you have a tang, or other fish that eat algae they will not leave it alone, my tang ate some chaeto once and it came out the same way it went in so I don't thank it is good for them.

The point about tangs is good.

I just dump the Chaetomorpha into the main tank and wedge it behind some live rock. Works for me so far.

I'd be careful about plugging the overflow box. Personally, I wouldn't do that.

the clear box idea with holes or slits cut into it and suctioned cup to the side seems like a nice idea if you do not have a sump/fuge to put it in, keeps the fish off it, and it from going all over the tank.
