skimmer bubles, and break in time...

k, i got my aqua c remora about...20 minutes ago lol. Its on my tank now and running. My questions are....

1. How big and how many bubbles should be frothing up into the cup? Right now mine has a TON of very small tiny bubbles, which is what its sposed to do right? Its not suposed to have large bubbles...correct?

2. About how long till it breaks in? It was used if that makes any difference.

Right now i've got the maxijet on there, but i plan on upgrading that sometime.

thanks in advance!
mike

1. the smaller the better
2. 2-5 days, or if you rinsed it in hot water it will break in faster.

dang i didnt rinse it in hot water. oh well.. anyways, its only been going for maybe 2 hours now, but the cup is about half full of water....theres just plain clear bubbles coming out of the top right now (i'm guessing just cuz it hasent broken in?) but should the cup already be that full, or is that just part of the brake in process?

not FULL...just half full. The bubles are still really fine, and they're frothing up over the tube (like they're sposed to..i think) and they're just building up in the cup, but turning back to water instead of staying as bubles...i dont know if i xplained that good...

the water isnt actually pooring into the cup...just the bubles but they're turning back into water once they get in the cup.

the pump is just the maxijet that comes w/it...i think the 1200?

but im hoping this is just part of the break in? also on the lide there is a hole that i'm assuming the guy i got it from drilled in it to put a tube on there...i'm guessing that would just go to a bigger jug that he had somewhere so he wouldnt have to empty it all the time?

you probably need to adjust height of water in the column. if the water seems clean in the cup then that is the problem. you should only get black water in the cup

thats normal.

the lid has a factory drilled hole, this is to let the air out of the lid, otherwise the lid would "pop" off.

It will start working soonish, the only thing you can do is sit back and wait.

reefsahoy brought up a good point that I had forgoten about.

there is a ring around the cup, if water is up there then you need to adjust it so it sits lower on the cup, this will get the cup higher from the skimmer itself, this gives you better quality skimmate

ok thanks. And ya i know that i gotta wait for it to actually start working, but i just wanna make sure its not gonna overflow in 4 hours lol. I read that manual, and i thought that it was actually helpful (who'da thunk a manual would be helpfull? lol) so thanks for that link. I'm just gonna start with the ring down lower to get a dryer foam instead of starting it up high like the manual said tho...i'd rather have it not get much at first instead of overflow lol. So should i empty out all that water thats in there now and start w/the ring further down or just keep the ring at halfway for a while? its still making a pretty wet foam instead of a dry one....

thanks

now your getting into the agrument of: which is better skimate? wet or dry? I prefer wet and a lot of other RC members do too.

Empty the cup, slide the ring further down, and make it a habit to empty the cup every day. Otherwise one day you will start to smell this horrible smell then suddenly you'll remember that you forgot to empty the cup and its not fun cleaning up after skimate.

sir dude, if you are still getting micro bubbles you may have to install a sponge around the output of the skimmer. this sponge needs to be partially in the water. the output of the skimmer might have micro bubbles and it will flow thru the sponge to the water table in the sump. the sponge will rid the micro bubbles.

i didnt get one with it...it was used, which is why i asked for a link to it, at which point most that was on the link was already answered for me i think.

reefsahoy-

according to the instruction manual, i SHOULD still be getting bubbles in the tank...its only been up for about, oh...6 hours.

you probably will always get bubbles. keep in mind a sponge ring around the exit port. if you look around in some of the threads you will see a sponge around the base of the exit port on the pictures of the skimmers out there. that's how they rid the bubbles. so if after break in period you're getting bubbles that'll be the solution.
