is he going to be ok? new tang just acclimated to qt *vid*
just acclimated a new tang i ordered off liveaquaria. The bag water temp that I recieved the fish in was 72 degrees! Yikes! The poor guy wasnt really swimming at all, morte of just laying there. I did a temp acclimation by setting the bag in the tank and letting it adjust. And then i proceded to do the cup ever 4 minutes routine. When done he perked up a good bit so i netted him into the qt tank. Well he was ****ed that I netted him and he struggled in the net, releasing his scapels. When i put the net in the qt tank he tried to dash away but his little scapel was caught in the net. I tried and tried and finally ripped a hole in the net to release him. I am monitoring him closely but he is just kind of sitting in a corner of the tank at the moment. Here is a video of him less than an hour into his new qt tank.
http://fish.conceyted.com/vid/newybhippo.mpg Slowly but surely he jumps up a little and swims half way up the glass then he sits back down. I know he just went through a lot of stress maybe he just wants to rest What do you all think?

1 don't net fish.
2 My internet rocks or your 20 meg video would take all day to get =] 3 Sounds like a rought 24hours. Personally I will never mail order fish again. Of the 4 I have ordered one made it and I just got my money back. Atleast live aquaria will get you another one or give you your money back if he dies. It doesnt look good.... I would turn the lights off and add a large pvc pipe to make him more comftorble. He looks like he wants to hide. Good luck

Most of my fish were mail ordered and not many problems at all. There are large pieces of pvc for him to hide in on the other side of the tank. I went ahead and turned out the lights. Lets hope he makes it.
Ps: 20 megs for a video is pretty darn small

Yeah I never use a net when handling saltwater fish. I would keep a close eye on it. It seems to be breathing very heavly. Wow you change a cup every 4 minutes??? I do a cup every 30 minutes. Also 72 degrees isnt bad. Good luck and I hope it calms down

Blue Hippos can be some of the most difficult tangs to get adjusted to aquarium life. i would provide something for him to hide in and keep the lights out for the entire day and night. Keep an eye on the water perimeters and be ready to do a water change if necessary ASAP. Other than that, give him some time and let him settle in. Continue to monitor and observe him for any signs of disease like ich or marine velvet. If that happens I would try hyposalinity. Good luck with him and i hope he makes it. keep us posted.

quick update before I head to work. As I previously stated I turned the lights on his tank off and turned the room lights off. He found his was into a rear corner next to some pvc and has wedged himself there. He keeps his fins moving and keeps himself in the upright position mostly but he isnt hovering off the bottom much at all. He is basically resting against pvc and the bottom of the tank. He does have lively spurts which makes me think he could still be okay, but only time will tell I guess. I have yet to see him make a swim around the tank. Except during the net incident.

I just got 2 today 1 Flame and 1 purple tang from Live aquaria they are currently in the QT tank the Tang seems okay but the Flame is just hanging in one corner, I am hoping he is just scared his color seems very light i am watching over him like a mother hen, i tried to feed them only the tang ate, next 24 hours will tell, but as they said Live aquaria will either credit or give refund, but I'd rather see him perk up

blue hippos like to wedge themselves into spots like that to rest. hopefully he's just hanging out. My blue hippo was very timid and inactive the whole time he was in qt, didn't really swim around much at all and ate poorly. When he went in the main tank he perked up immediately.

Put some live rock or something he can hide in. He will be OK, just freaked out with no where to hide.

is it true you have to feed the really small ones 4 times a day?
i bought one two weeks ago and put him in 6 month old tank (with places to hide) and for 3 days he seemed happy...he was swimming and eating and looking very normal and healthy.... than on the fourth day he was dead on the bottom on the tank all pale....i had been feeding my tank four times a day for the first two days than i took it to three than two and than dead.... |

I do not know about feeding 4X per day. They just seem to be very fragile until they get larger. You never really know how they were collected either.

just got home. He wedged himself in the back corner behind some pvc, and his fins werent moving. I wasnt sure if he had died so i moved the pvc a little and he swam backwards and into a different corner. I am gonna leave him alone tomorrow and hope for the best. He looks like he was just sleeping or something. I dunno this is really a bummer. I never knew I could be this stressed out over a fish :-/

I have lost two hippos in the last month. I had a tiny one that I nursed back from near death, only to have it get stuck to my Tunze 3 days after leaving QT. I then bought a larger one, only to have it die in QT of velvet with in 1 1/2 days. It sucks to lose $70 worth of fish in a week!
Both of my Tangs would scoot to a corner and play dead everytime I got near the QT. I think the behavior you are seeing is normal for them. Just keep an eye out for ich or velvet.

Tangs are great at hiding. Don't let him know you see him.
