What temp is the right temp for FOWLR
I live in thailand so its HOT all day everyday.
My tank temp was 86 until i added a new 1200 GPH powerhead (tank is 225g) and now its 89.6 I know if i want to have any coral i am going to have to get a chiller. But can i have fish in 89.6 water? |

I would advise against it. Most FOWLR tanks tend to run colder than reef's. Mine happens to run at 79-80, which is the average temp for reefs.
But more to the point most natural reef's around the world do not have temperatures of 90 degrees for more than a month out of the year; I can imagine that although these reef systems cope with the heat, it is not the most comfortable environment. 90 degree temp is definately a celicing for reef aquaria. Thus my advice would be to lower the temp; a chiller would be in order. If you currently have inhabitants in your aquarium, I would suggest putting ice cubes into the water as a temporary solution.

if you are using a heater........ try taking that out and not using one
that might drop the temp a little

Have you tried using fans? Most fish aren't going to like water that hot, especially not 24 hours per day. In the ocean, they can move to various depths and hence, different temps. It would be best to keep it around 78-82 degrees, or a bit cooler.

You need to get your temperature down. You should add some fans.

Have them blow length-wise across the surface if possible.

Ok so i pulled the two front sections of the 3 peice hood off, thenj i grabbed a household fan (rather big one) and stuck it on top of a couple of boxes and have it pointed at the waters surface blowing length wise and towards where the air may escape from the room.
I have the fan running on 3 its max output.... and let me tell ya there is a fairly cool and strong breeze running over the surface... you can see the water rippling on the wind.... Lets see how it is in the morning...

just one domestic fan on a stand run overnight dropped the temp to 81-82... just amazing.
Now i have removed the huge pond pump from inside the tank that i was using as a powerhead (1200 GPH) and put on in thats 1/2 the size... and i am maintaining the temp with a desk fan. Soon we will be buying some computer case fans and installing them into our hood sucking and blowing.
