cutting back on green star polyps

These are in my tank and starting to encrust my LR. Is there a good way to pull it off the rock? Im not having any luck for it has really attached to the rock.

2 options:

1) putty over the polyps if there aren't that many.

2) pull out the rock and give it a kalkwasser bath for a few hours. that should kill anything on it.

I see. Just use the plumber's putty from Home Depot. You have to get the stick that comes in mulitiple sizes. It's usually in the plumbing section near the unions, etc. DO NOT get the stainless plumber's putty that comes in a small tub.

P.S. You need to knead by hand for a few minutes before it's ready. It will feel warm in your hand. Then just maybe apply a small amount of super glue to the bottom of your piece of putty and squish it on top of the offending star polyps. Make sure you cover them because they are extremely clever and will grow around edges you don't cover.

The putty should look something like this (Aquamend) but will have a different name:

You could also try killing them like your would aiptasia. Take some kalk powder (I use 1/2 tsp of buffer powder) and dissolve it in a couple of ounces of boiling water. Turn off your pumps and apply the mixture to the GSP's. I use a turkey baster but you could also use a syringe or something similar. Just be careful about what is below the area you treat.

It may require a few treatments to kill them all. They should be easy to peel off the rock once dead.

I did this today in my nanocube to kill a couple of small aiptasias and some colonial hydroid polyps.

You have to isolate them or they will take over. I am going to scrape some off this weekend using a razor blade (glass cleaner style). If the rock is somewhat flat this works pretty well. If the rock is not, they usually peel, but not easily.

Sorry for not contributing to solve your problem but wanted to tell you that's a great looking tank.

I don't know if that epoxy putty is ok or not. It is not the same brand that I have used from Home Depot. Does it say it is ok for aquarium use?

What methods are out there to isolate GSP?

Is there anything that will control it naturally? Another coral?

Mine avoids my hammer coral, but it has grown around it's reach. Definately a coral I wish I'd either avoided or controlled better, like xenia.

Option 2 will kill everything on the rock.. once you return it to the tank, everything will start to decay and put your tank through another nitrogen cycle.

I'm in the same spot. My gsp didnt do anything for almost 2 years. It stayed in one spot and didnt grow very much. Now the last few months its spreading like widlefire. It took out my monit digi and monti cap. It also made my clam move, lol. And now its starting to invade my pom pom

I thought green star polyps do not sting other corals and are the most likely to loose against any other coral.

If that's true, I thought green star polyps would be a good choice to place between other corals.

Am I wrong?

The epoxy putty I have doesnt say anywhere on it that it is safe for aquariums(because I found it in the plumbers section at Home Depot). But it does say it cures underwater. It can be used for boats.
