Bare live rock...ticked off!

I got 60 lbs of live rock today and it sure does look bare! Half of it it "shelf like" and flat and the other is rounder rock. It all looks bare to me. A few spots here and there of coraline. No critters at all! Not even one little bristle worm! Am I barking up the wrong tree? Did I have my expectations too high?

Who did you buy it from? How was it advertise? Some of us go to great lengths to make sure our rock has nothing on it that we don't put on it ( rock cooking) . It may be a mixed blessing.

I know that but I almost feel like I got ripped! The website I got it from( I dont really want to post it) has several pics of nice looking rock. So it was really misleading. Other than this the guy said he would give me the best picks of a 5,000 lb shipment he just got in. I see all these other people who have posted pics of their new live rock that is beautiful. I feel almost embarrased to post any pics of mine, much less feel proud of them! Like I said, maybe Im over reacting a bit. Cant be sure yet. How long does it normally take for a bare looking rock to become full of life again? And will getting some small (5lbs) pieces of really pretty rock from a LFS speed this up? thanks

It is 'live' rock if it has bacteria infusing its outer pores to a fair depth. You may actually see some things come out on it after your tank has cycled and the water params get up to snuff: sponges and the like. There are also sites where you can get some grunge with worms and sponge and the like, which I would do in your position. It would colonize that rock in short order.

at night after all the lights in your house are off and the tank lights have been off for like 30 minutes get a flastlight (red lends works the best) and start looking at your rock. You'd be shocked at how much life might be stirring on it.

SOunds like you got ripped to me. Sure it may have life in it, but if it was advertised, with pics of rock covered in coralline, and life, then the rock you got should have at least some visible growth. Esp if it was the pick of the shipment.

I recomend posting in the vendor expereinces forum, and post pics of your rock, and link of the pics from the website, if possible.

Personally, I would want all kinds of wild, crazy looking stuff all over my "live" rock. If they are flat smooth pieces with only coralline growing in a couple of spots then I would want a refund or another shipment.

POST SOME PICS FOR US SO WE CAN SEE IT.

yeah, I am curious to see it as well, also where you purchased it from, as I would not want to end up purchasing from a place that sends "live" rock out looking as you described.

Looks like bad base rock to me.

Definatly doesn't look anywhere close to the rock pictured. I would be contacting the seller.

Just playing devils advocate here, but the true test of a company's inegrity is what kind of premium they place on customer service. I would like to have seen what your experience would have been if you had contacted them before posting this thread, only to see how they would have handled your situation. Anyone can mess up an order, but the good ones make it right without being outed first.

I emailed him before posting and questioned the "live" rock. I havent received a reply yet. I wasnt ugly, just basically said I was pretty dissapointed in the rock and was expecting beter. Im pretty sure he will repond Monday. I will post what he plans to do if anything. I sure hope he does something!! Although I dont know what would be fair to ask of him. Any ideas?

No your expectations are not too high.

If you have an idea of a specific picture of what the rock looked like then that is what you will expect.

Most times the coraline and macro algeas will die off depending on when it was harvested and where from. It however will come back, and the life on the rock will flourish again with some patience.

I started with the same stuff a year ago and have so much life I am still looking at the tank to find new things.

I didn't mean to sound judgemental. I am really only interested in real world experiences with online retailers so I can learn from others who have handed money over for items that are really site unseen. I would think based on your pictures, they should pay for shipping and get you something more like what you thought you were purchasing. Anything less would be unexceptible IME. Please keep us posted so I can add them to my list if they don't do right by you.

My concern would not be visual life on the rock but the size and shape of rock. This size of your rock looks OK but it does not seem to have much shape (holes and such) Here is an example

It stinks that they mislead you, but don't lose hope on the rock if they won't replace it!
Add some more from your lfs. I think it will probably be ok. Give it a month or so (i know that's a long time to wait when you thought you wouldn't have to!) and see what it looks like then.

That LR is not at all what I would have expected even for low expectations... Does the guy have a guarantee? I agree with the person who posted before about it looking like base rock....

That's not only bare, it's without holes. It doesn't have that much surface area.

I noticed on his website that he offers a 7 day guarantee...thats prob not valid on exchanges...but I would explain that you are not satisfied and as a family owned business they should take that as a business solution and ship you what they advertise. That is what I would do.
